Add CUPS Printer

by James Stroud last modified 2008-11-13 05:14

This adds a raw CUPS printer to your printer choices.

Talk to your favorite sysadmin and get him or her to configure a printer to be shared as a CUPS printer. The following works at my place of employment, so I know it can be done.

  1. Open CUPS: http://127.0.0.1:631
  2. Click "Printers"
  3. Scroll all the way down, click "Add Printer"
  4. Enter administrator name and password if asked.
  5. Enter the appropriate info, e.g.:
    1. Name: "lj1"
    2. Location: "Boyer 205"
    3. Description: "Xerox Phaser 4500 - lj1"
  6. Click "Continue"
  7. Device: "AppSocket/HP JetDirect"
  8. Click "Continue"
  9. Device URI: "socket://lj1.mbi.ucla.edu
  10. Click "Continue"
  11. Make: "Raw"
  12. Click "Continue"
  13. Model: "Raw Queue (en)"
  14. Click "Continue"
  15. Click on the name of the printer where it says "Printer lj1 has been added successfully" (yours will say whatever you entered inĀ  Step 5A above)
  16. Click "Print Test Page" to make sure it worked
  17. Open Printer Setup Utility under /Applications/Utilities
  18. Select the newly added printer from the Printer List
  19. Click "Show Info" from the Tool Bar (or Printers -> Show Info) from the Menu
  20. Select "Printer Model" from the pulldown menu under the printer name
  21. Navigate to and select the correct printer model
